30 Stores to Shop for Small Homes and Spaces

Where to shop for organizing products and compact furniture and appliances.

If you have a small home or are fighting with small, dysfunctional spaces in your home, you can purchase organizing products, compact appliances, and low-profile, multi-functional furniture to transform the space. But where to shop? I’ve got you covered with this list of 30 Stores to Shop for Small Homes and Spaces.

In this article:

Shopping for Tiny Homes and Small Spaces

For tiny homes and small spaces, you may need to source furniture, appliances, and storage solutions at specialty stores or have them custom made. There are stores that specialize in multi-function, convertible furniture or even room systems, and others that have small space collections. Many appliance stores carry compact versions.

Check out the list of stores below for some options or search for “compact”, “tiny house”, or “apartment” furniture or appliances. To expand your search, you could search for stores in countries where apartments, and homes in general, are a lot smaller.

For tiny homes, builders of your type of tiny home are a good source to point you to specialty suppliers. For those that use propane, check out camping, RV, or boating solutions.

Choosing Organizing Products

  1. Choose containers and other solutions with a focus first on function and the size of the space they will need to fit in. Also consider how they will be used and maintained. For example, you won’t use cardboard for cutlery because they will often be a little wet. Same goes for a garage or shed because they are not climate controlled.

  2. The type of container and system should also be determined by your organizing style (hidden vs. visible, detailed vs. general). Break up your categories into smaller containers if your preference is for detailed categories (or finding things quicker). If you want or need things to be visible, you can use open or see-through containers.

  3. Next, how important it is to you that everything matches and looks “Pinterest perfect”? Matching, pretty products help with visual noise and distraction, but it may not be a priority for your budget or your values on consumerism and the environment.

  4. Be sure to measure width, height, and depth of the space the item will be in and keep an eye out for things that will get in the way, like pipes under a sink or baseboards.

Setting Priorities for Your Budget

Before you look at new products, gather what you have first and determine if they will work for your needs and organizing styles.

The cost of organizing products can add up. If you’re on a limited budget (or value less consumerism), there are ways to save -- from using household items like Tupperware® and Kleenex® boxes to focusing your budget on the things that will be visible.

For the solutions in my home, I like to start at Costco and Dollar Tree and work my way up the cost chain. However, Costco has limited choices and Dollar Tree doesn’t always have a bunch of the same item. Costco is great for velvet hangers and large bins, and for Dollar Tree, the key is to suss out the stores in your area to find out which ones carry a lot of organizing products. Not all Dollar Trees are created equal.

While I find Dollar Tree solutions adequate, something can be said for quality pieces built to last. Besides focusing your budget on visible items, you may want to splurge on The Container Store®, West Elm, or other high-end products for items that need to be sturdy and last, such as a Lazy Susan or turntable. These days, though, a lot of similar products can be found for cheaper at other stores like Target, Walmart, or Amazon, so be sure to comparison shop.
